FRONT has completed our most ambitious rug project to date with designer Jan Kath.
A vast 8 x 8 m rug has been created for the presidential castle in Riga, Latvia. The detailed design was recreated from black-and-white photos of the original 1920s rug, which disappeared during WWII.
Woven in Nepal in one piece on the biggest loom in the world, the rug’s patterns and colours were reconstructed by researching similar rugs by the same designer in local museums, and by consulting with Latvian ethnographers.
